Across school Mastering maths

At Netherhall St James Math is taught using the mastery approach We strive to ensure that all our pupils acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.
Our aim is to develop a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in Maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress.

We ensure skills are embedded within Maths lessons and in wider areas of the curriculum and developed consistently over time for all children. We want to foster a love and enjoyment for Maths in our children.   We aim to ensure that, regardless of background and ability, every child has a rich and meaningful Mathematics Education. Our curriculum ensures that skills can be recalled quickly and efficiently with clear understanding as well as being used to reason and problem solve in Maths, other areas of the curriculum and their everyday lives. Our curriculum is designed in small steps to support, scaffold and challenge all pupils’ learning. We use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach to further scaffold our pupil’s learning through the use of physical and visual aids to build a child’s understanding of abstract topics and to ensure a deeper understanding of Mathematical concepts.

Across school we are also taking part in the NCETM Mastering Number Program This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave

In the Early Years our teaching and practice is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Alongside this we use aspects of the White Rose Maths along with daily sessions from the NRICH Maths mastery approach. This to help children's understanding of the numbers to 10 and build fluency with key number skills.

We use Number block and Numicon tiles to give children practical, fun and engaging experiences within their daily Maths sessions.

Both reception and Nursery classes have inviting maths areas within the continuous provision to allow children the opportunity to consolidate and develop their skills independently. As well as this we offer opportunities for mathematical based learning within all areas of the provision.

In early years the children's maths learning journey is documented within a maths book, floor book and through individual observations.

In Key Stage One we use the White Rose Maths Curriculum to support planning and our teachers use other resources to enhance the quality of education in Maths for all children.

We ensure that children always have access to manipulatives to support their learning.

We have a weekly ‘key skills’ lessons to promote and support children’s rapid recall and fluency skills. We use Jungle Maths to secure children’s arithmetic skills. Children work their way through the program and success is celebrated at every stage.

We use Numbots to support the learning for all children focusing on addition, subtraction and early place value knowledge. Numbots enables children to approach Maths in a fun, creative and interactive way developing their level of independence through the use of ICT.  Each child has their own unique login so that they can continue their learning at home.
