RE

At the Netherhall St James CoE (VC) Infant & Nursery school, Religious education is conducted according to the Agreed Syllabus for Kirklees, Calderdale and Leeds 2019-2024, entitled 'Believing and Belonging'.

The syllabus is enquiry based, focusing around investigations of key questions and pupils’ personal reflection. Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism are studied in depth alongside non-religious world views. We encourage children to think about their own views and values in relation to the themes and topics studied in the RE curriculum.

As a Voluntary Controlled Church of England school, our RE curriculum reflects the requirement for two-thirds of the teaching to be on Christianity, whilst also including coverage of the variety of world faiths and diversity between them.

RE is taught in regular, timetabled slots, equivalent to an hour a week. We provide a wide range of activities and there are plenty of opportunities for cross-curricular links with subjects such as Art, Music, Drama, PSHE and computing.

Why RE Matters - Taken from the Agreed Syllabus

“RE plays an important role in preparing pupils for their future, for employment and lifelong learning. It enhances their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by:

  • Developing awareness of the fundamental questions raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them;
  • Responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions and other belief systems, relating them to their own understanding and experience;
  • Reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.”
