The aims of the Mathematics Department relate to all year groups but are especially relevant to those students in key Stage 4 who may be considering taking Mathematics after GCSE.

To develop an ability to think and reason Mathematically.

To notice and realise the application of Mathematics in everyday life.

To have the understanding of how to use Mathematics up to GCSE level and create a firm foundation for those wishing to study the subject further.

What will I do in lessons?

Students in Year 10 will continue to study topics from the four major areas: number; algebra; shape, space and measures; and data handling. New topics are introduced under these headings such as errors in calculations, surds, solving quadratic equations and statistical measures.

Other topics are studied to a greater depth than in Year 9. Students will be expected to develop the ability to apply their mathematics to real-life contexts and have a good understanding of how to tackle unstructured questions.

How will this subject be of use in the future? 

Mathematics is useful to students pursuing a wide range of careers, from accounting, computing and engineering to nursing and business. Mathematics is a benefit when studying many subjects at A-Level, including, Psychology, Sciences, Business Studies and Geography, as it allows students to understand and interpret results.
