What will I learn in this subject?

Reading

Students will be provided with opportunities to read literary, non-literary and media texts, some of which will be whole works, and the work of a wide range of authors from a variety of cultures and times (A Christmas Carol and Animal Farm). The range of texts available to students will include poetry, plays (Blood Brothers or An Inspector Calls), short stories, novels, anthologies, letters, travel books, newspapers, literature from different cultures, works of reference and electronic databases. All students are required to study a complete a work of Shakespeare.


Writing

Students will be provided with opportunities to write in a wide range of styles and forms, including critical and imaginative responses to the reading of literature. Students will be given opportunities to demonstrate that they can: write about their experiences and express what they feel and imagine; understand, order and present facts, ideas and opinions; show a sense of audience and an awareness of style in a variety of situations and use English grammar correctly.


Speaking & Listening

Students will be given opportunities to demonstrate that they can: articulate experience and express what they feel and imagine; understand, order and present facts, ideas and opinions and communicate a sensitive personal response to what is heard, read and understood.

What will I do in lessons?

Lessons will consist of reading and analysing texts, planning and writing essays, note-taking, personal presentations, peer observation and class discussions.


What qualifications will I receive? 

Edexcel English Language and English Literature (2 separate GCSEs).

An additional Functional Skills (Edexcel) qualification will be made available for students not achieving a GCSE standard.

How will this subject be of use in the future?

English is a subject that acts as a foundation for further study and for life after school. The course will provide you with a solid foundation on which to build your future, and effectively equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding you need in order to be successful in an increasingly demanding world in the vital areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening. 


How will I be assessed?

All students will be assessed on their application of reading and writing skills.
